For people who like oddball history, from my 1946 Bantam Pocket Inside USA booklet, by John Gunther:
State of Jefferson
Hawaii may become the forty-ninth American state some day, and Alaska the fiftieth. California saw recently an attempt to make another. Four of the state's extreme northern counties, icluding Del Norte and Siskiyou, joined with one of the southernmost Oregon counties, Curry, and attempted to promote a union. These counties are remote, isolated and somewhat neglected by their mother states; moreover they form a natural bloc. The man largely responsible for the idea-he wanted to call the new state Jefferson-died however of a heart attack, and the campaign was dropped in 1941 after Pearl Harbor.
I'm currently speculating about emigration to the U.S. The physical climae would be most like home in the Pacific Northwest, but where in the Union would be the best political climate? Does anyone have any recommendations?
